MEDIA OPPORTUNITIES
A SHORT INTRODUCTION TO SUPERHERO FILMS
A cycle of contemporary Hollywood films adapted from comic books and featuring heroic characters with superhuman powers. Superheroes have been part of part of the hinterland of US cinema since the 1930s, with characters such as Buck Rogers, Flash Gordon, and Superman appearing in comic books, newspaper comic strips, radio serials, and television programmes. However, the dedicated, large-budget, special-effects heavy, superhero film is a relatively recent phenomenon, usually traced back to the New Hollywood blockbuster Superman (Richard Donner, 1978) and its sequels. The subsequent success of Tim Burton's Batman (1989), which achieved a reimagining, or ‘rebooting’, of a pre-existing superhero character by combining adult themes, moral angst, and a dark, noirish mise-en-scene with high octane fight sequences, encouraged Hollywood producers to seek out similar superhero franchises through the 1990s.

The best way to generate discussion is by asking questions about your facts (i.e. what you have described). The three most useful questions to ask are:
1. WHY? [This asks: what is the aim or purpose of this? It also asks: why did this happen
or come about, why did it originate?]
2. SO WHAT? [This asks: what are the consequences, outcomes, results or implications of this?
This can include both practical and theoretical implications of something]
3. WHAT IF? [This asks: are there any alternatives? It also asks: what would be the situation if
this had not happened or what would be the situation if this were absent? This question allows you to make comparisons, for example, with another country or to use ‘what if’ scenarios as part of your discussion]
Asking these three questions of the information that you have described will generate some analytical answers; you are looking for answers that are relevant to your task e.g. addressing an essay question, presenting information about a topic or analysing a media product.
